Conceptual Analogy

چکیده

Conceptual analogy (CA) is an approach, that integrates conceptualization based on prior experiences, i.e. case memory organization, and analogical reasoning (Borner and Janetzko 1995, Borner and Wode 1995). It was prototypically implemented and tested to support the design process in building engineering (B orner 1994a). This paper reviews the development of CA. It provides the basic assumptions and surveys the psychological results which in uenced the development of CA. It argues for the combination and integration of di erent proposals to memory organization, case-based reasoning and analogical reasoning to reduce the complexity of design support.

آفرینش معماری به‌ روش قیاس با طبیعت

Architectural design inspired by nature is one of the conventional methods in architectural design, but different types of the influence of nature on architectural design are not well studied yet. In spite of the importance of the type of inspiration, there is not a significant research about the relation of this method with other methods of architectural creation, nor about the correct way of ...

Using Analogy to Promote Conceptual Modeling Reuse

This paper argues in favor of a database conceptual schema and Semantic Web ontology design discipline that explores analogy mappings to reuse the structure and integrity constraints of conceptual models, stored in a repository. We presuppose that a team of expert conceptual designers would build a standard repository of source conceptual models, which less experienced designers would use to cr...

Analogy Generation with HowNet

Analogy is a powerful boundary-transcending process that exploits a conceptual system's ability to perform controlled generalization in one domain and re-specialization into another. The result of this semantic leap is the transference of meaning from one concept to another from which metaphor derives its name (literally: to carry over). Such generalization and re-specialization can be achieved...

Setting limits on analogy : Why conceptual combination is not structural alignment

Structure-mapping or structural alignment is fast emerging as a unifying principle for a variety of different phenomena; including analogy, metaphor, similarity and conceptual combination. In this paper, we argue that it is inappropriate to extend this idea to conceptual combination, as has been done in dual-process theory (Wisniewski, 1997a, in press). There are theoretical and empirical groun...

An analogy-oriented type hierarchy for linguistic creativity

Metaphor and analogy are perhaps the most challenging aspects of linguistic creativity for a conceptual representation to facilitate, since by their very nature they seek to stretch the boundaries of domain description and dynamically establish new ways of determining inter-domain similarity. By solving the vexing representational problems posed by these phenomena, we can create a more fluid co...

Metaphor and Information Flow

This paper develops a formal model for metaphor and analogy built on information flow theory, formal concept analysis and conceptual graphs. Metaphor and analogy are important principles of human cognition based on representational maps. The model suggested in this paper defines metaphoric use in terms of information transfer via an information channel with respect to contextual constraints.
